Origins of the Furukawa Electric Group

The Furukawa Electric Group of which Furukawa Automotive Systems is a member traces its origins back to 1884. That year our founder, Ichibei Furukawa, started operations in copper smelting at his headquarters in Tokyo. Meanwhile Yoshichi Yamada began manufacturing aluminum wire in Takashimacho, Yokohama.

Later, Furukawa Electric supported Japan’s infrastructure with the world’s highest levels of quality and technical capability. To serve the booming demand in Japan for electrical power and communications, the Group laid the first made-in-Japan undersea cables and erected the antenna on Tokyo Tower, the largest in the world at the time.
Today Furukawa Group companies are engaged in industries such as finance, machinery, electrical wire, rubber, chemicals, electrical machinery, communication equipment, light metals and electronics, making active use of the distinctive characteristics of each business.
